The way you build a wedding aesthetic is through hundreds of carefully-considered choices large and small. And the cake? It’s what you’d get if you took that aesthetic and boiled it down (or, ahem, baked it) to an essence. In spontaneous homage to the sweeter things in life, we picked out six moments when Sweet Talk flowers were—well, not exactly the icing on the cake, but pretty damn close.
Dyed-and-dried fronds and milky white orchids achieved a tropical vibe without leaving the realm of classic. We love how the as-if-ribbed textured finish on the frosting echoed the lines of the fronds, and how the seashell-like dollops reinforced the shorefront feel.

On the topic of texture, those pretty pearl-like details were an apt allusion to bridal accoutrements. On our part, we arranged the corsage-like cake flowers to rest diagonally along the layers. As for the blooms: The late-July, burnt sienna focal points were in keeping with the rest of Rachel and Alejandro’s seasonal color palette.

You’ve seen the shabby-chic living room set, and now you’ve seen the shabby-chic cake. The eggshell-hued frosting is lightly layered for a chalk-paint-like finish, and that antique tray is ever so English country. To lean into the theme, we added freshly-plucked roses à la Rachel Ashwell’s back garden.

Yes, those pressed flowers and leaves are real. We prepped them just a day or two in advance so they’d stay vibrant, then applied them by hand to that blank-canvas-perfect, three-layered beaut. Cakes like these have a whimsical meets streamlined effect that we just can’t get enough of.

The petal-like frosting ruffles were just begging for floral garnishes, right? Agreed. We added blooms in warm hues in keeping with the sunny color palette, plus enchanted-forest-evoking curling dried twigs. No surprise if a woodland fairy pops out of this cake.

For sumptuousness to rival any 17th century Italian still-life, try mixing fresh fruit in with your florals. The ambrosial combo was an apt choice for this Venetian restaurant wedding (everybody, make a reservation at SRV Boston), and we were pretty damn delighted to carry out the request.
