This Rhode Island spring garden wedding was an ode to the earth coming alive again after winter. And in fact, that was the main inspiration behind our floral design. While there was an undeniable vibrancy to the blooms, we also took care to strike an organic-feeling balance. This way, the arrangements and installs felt—at a glance—like they simply grew that way. For Julia and Sam, who love the outdoors and spring flowers, it was just what they envisioned. Let’s get into it.
Spring in New England is deeply characterized by flowering fruit trees, bursting with blooms just about everywhere you look. So we gathered boughs of peach blossoms, apple blossoms, and crabapple blossoms to adorn Julia and Sam’s ceremonial installs. Then we wove in tons more spring flowers in the season’s pastels. These notably included tulips, daffodils, and butter-petaled peonies.

Julia wanted her wedding whites to extend to the flowers in her hands. In keeping with her dream of organic-feeling florals, we crafted a wide-reaching bridal bouquet that would flutter and sway on any breeze. You might recognize the arum lilies, orchids, and white daffodils. Then the greens at play include bells of Ireland, twisty allium stems, and long, draping strands of amaranthus.
What do poetry and floristry have in common? A healthy respect for negative space. Some of the best poems are as much about the blank space on the page as they are about the well-chosen words. In our opinion, it’s the same with floral designs. And don’t get us wrong, we’re crazy about luxurious, over-the-top florals—but we’re always thinking about the best way to arrange them so that none of the delicious elements at play get lost in the sauce.
The designs for this reception serve as a great example. We worked with a delightfully rich assortment of blooms, and we were careful to showcase each one. A few standouts: the allium spiraling up like steam, the reflexed tulips with space to breathe, the little purple glory of the sun blooms pulling focus to their tiny vibrant petals, and that proud and blushing Icelandic poppy with the cute wonky stem.
There are so many praises to sing about Shepherd’s Run, but here’s an abridged take. The place has a traditional charm with subtle modern twists. The grounds are gorgeous, with picturesque architectural moments out of a fairytale. And the Event Hall, where Julia and Sam’s reception was held, has a towering wooden ceiling and giant picture windows that bathe the whole space in gentle, natural light.
