We’re as fond of roses and dahlias as the next florists—but it’s our penchant for the unusual that really sets our designs apart. Read on for some of our favorite weird flowers, and why we reach for them again and again.
Come for its wacky shape, stay for its velvety exterior. Also known as cockscomb, brain celosia is a super unusual gem we work with often thanks to its delightful texture and its knack for turning any arrangement into one you’ll never forget.
The seed fountain that is amaranthus drips from designs in a way that feels richly abundant. It’s why we love weaving it into bouquets, hanging installs, ceremony florals…the list goes on. (Not pictured: the way it sways delicately on a breeze.)
See those long speckled blooms that look a little like calla lilies? They’re called sarracenia, or trumpet pitchers, and fun fact: They’re a carnivorous flower! As in, they legit trap and digest insects. We use them because they’re gorgeous, duh—but also…sometimes an arrangement’s gotta have a little bite to it.
Yep, allium, like onions and garlic. There’s the ones with the Seussian purple heads of flowers and then there’s the ones with the wonky stems, each of which has a mind of its own. Either way, the effect will dial up the whimsy of any floral creation.
These petalful blooms have a certain, shall we say…sunnyside-up quality about them that we can’t get enough of. Because while it’s not exactly intuitive to evoke fried eggs in a bridal bouquet, you gotta admit they bring something special to the mix.
Nature makes green balloons, and they’re called milkweed seed pods. This is probably the wackiest flora matter on this page, and if you love it we might be soulmates. Why we’re obsessed: the curves, the texture, the verdant hue—and most of all because it’s just so damn weird!
They’re nicknamed flame lilies for a reason: Each petal carves out a rippling tapered shape like the fluttering edges of a fire. So naturally they amount to the wow factor brightening any design with personality and verve.
There are sooo many varieties, but two we like are the pincushions (those spiny flowers at the base of the bouquet on the left) and banksia (the beehive-esque blooms at the base of the install on the left). Whatever the variety, protea just has a knack for nailing an eccentric yet regal vibe we love.
These little sun spots are as close to guaranteed mood boosters as we’ve ever found, exuding a sense of wonder and delight anywhere they go. And P.S. They make great wedding souvenirs. Take them home, let them dry, and you’ll see: They’ll look…literally exactly the same forever.
