In writing about this idyllic wedding, we just couldn’t resist nodding to one of our favorite recent trends. We’re talking, of course, about Tomato Girl Summer.
It’s partially because Liza and Matt wanted local spoon tomato vines and potted herbs worked into their floral centerpieces. It’s also because the private seaside home in Nonquitt, Mass, where they said I do, had the very same languid, Mediterranean-esque vibes that the trend is meant to evoke. And finally it’s because both the food and all those pretty blooms were a) in season and b) locally-sourced. (Tomato Girls inspire us all to live more seasonally.) The farm-to-table menu was provided by Forklift Catering and the regeneratively-grown flowers came from Weatherlow before being designed by yours truly. Wondering about who pulled it all together? Kelly Golia Events. You’re welcome.
But in the truest Tomato Girl fashion, Liza’s superb choices weren’t in response to trends at all. In fact, she’s actually one of the most sentimental brides we’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. Case in two points: Her gorgeous gown was worn first by her grandmother and then by her mother before being passed down to her; and she specifically requested the flowers that reminded her most of summers at her grandmother’s, which—did we mention?—is where the wedding was held. And because we’re sentimental too, we foraged near the venue for native grasses, foliage, and branches to incorporate into installs.
Now for all you flora nerds, some specifics… Special requests included dahlias (notice both the ball and dinnerplate varieties), zinnias, limelight hydrangea, and strawflower. And among the foraged elements, there were sea oats aplenty with their special clickety rustling sounds in a tousling breeze. There were little white heptacodium blossoms, long sprigs of feather grass, and heaps of reddened raspberry foliage. And because it was a fantastic season for cosmos, we worked them in everywhere we could. It was a spirited bunch that really beautifully represented the time and place: the last week of summer in New England.
